IRON FORTIFIED RICE, NATIONAL RE-LAUNCHING


The National Food Authority (NFA)-ARMM headed by Regional Director Engr. Benjamin B. Marta re-launches the I-RICE Program last March 21, 2011 together with its key stakeholders, local government units (LGU) and other program partners who affirmed their commitment of support. The re-launching was held in Cotabato City State Polytechnic Gymnasium in Cotabato City at around 8:30 in the morning.

The re-launching of the I-RICE Program according to Director Marta is a nationwide simultaneous activity in compliance to Republic Act 8976 otherwise known as Food Fortification Act of 2000 to address one of the most prevalent nutritional disorders in the Philippines today especially among six year old pre-school children and mothers of reproductive age which is micronutrient malnutrition otherwise known as “hidden hunger” which refers to the lack of Vitamin A, Iron, and Iodine.

Director Marta said that the Department of Health (DOH) through the Bureau of Foods and Drugs (BFAD) is the lead implementing agency of the fortification of rice, the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) for sugar, the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) for edible oil, Bureau of Customs for imported products and the local government units (LGU) for monitoring public markets, retail stores and food service establishment.

Director Marta said that they are re-launching the I-RICE program to raise more awareness to the public about the benefits  of iron-fortified rice and at the same time promote its acceptability to the populace.
